I caught up to Taylor and Katrina Stiebs, Penrod's chief people officer, recently to talk about Penrod's office. Q: Talk about the process that was used to determine the look of your office space?

Joe Taylor "We were really inspired by what companies are doing in San Francisco and how they use open space. We especially loved how, instead of walls, they used lighting and flooring to create separate areas. We worked with an architect to get the floor plan mostly mapped out, but faced struggles as we were growing quickly and had fast-evolving requirements.

We have an eclectic mix of rustic and modern furnishings, many of which were sourced locally. We also got creative with some pieces. In particular, we learned that the high gloss IKEA furniture made for an excellent whiteboard surface, so we designed desks and cabinets that can all be used as whiteboards. Q: Has the office space been helpful in recruiting and retaining employees?

Katrina Stiebs "Yes, it's definitely an attractive feature. We love touring our prospective Milwaukee hires through the office and have had a lot of great feedback about the space. While recruitment and retention wasn't a focused goal of the office design, we love having a space that helps people feel excited to be here, provides flexibility throughout the day, and has a good mix of work and play. Ultimately, what matters the most is not the stuff and the office, but our values and culture and how our office design enables that whether it's your first day or your 1,th day at Penrod.

Q: Can you explain some of the unique aspects of the space and how it is helpful to employees? Taylor "We wanted to create a public space aspect to our office which is why we have the stage.
